What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp (epoch time) counts the seconds elapsed since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC, ignoring leap seconds. It is a compact, time-zone-independent way to store moments in databases, logs and APIs.
Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds?
JavaScript and Java commonly use milliseconds. Some databases and high-resolution clocks use microseconds or nanoseconds. Choose the unit explicitly when known; auto-detection is only a size-based estimate. JavaScript dates display millisecond precision.
Time zones and daylight saving
The selected IANA time zone controls display and interpretation of date-time inputs. A wall time skipped by a daylight-saving transition cannot be converted. During a repeated fall-back hour, the same wall time can represent two different instants.
Year 2038
Systems storing the timestamp as a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.
