Unit Converter
Convert storage units without mixing decimal SI prefixes and binary IEC prefixes. Also covers length, mass, temperature and speed. Calculations run locally.
1 byte = 8 bits
How many files fit?
Estimate whole files that fit in a data capacity. SI units use powers of 1,000; IEC units use powers of 1,024. The result is a mathematical capacity estimate and excludes filesystem, formatting and reserved-space overhead.

SI decimal vs IEC binary data sizes
SI prefixes are decimal: 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, up through 1 PB = 1015 bytes. IEC prefixes are binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,0242 bytes, up through 1 PiB = 1,0245 bytes. Lowercase b means bit; uppercase B means byte. By definition 1 byte = 8 bits. Network speeds are often quoted in bits per second while file sizes are usually bytes.
Temperature and other conversions
Temperature conversions use the exact Celsius/Fahrenheit/Kelvin formulas; temperatures are not converted by a simple scale factor because their zero points differ. Length and mass use standard unit relationships; speed values are converted through metres per second.
About precision
Results use JavaScript floating-point arithmetic and are formatted to at most 12 significant digits for readability. Extremely large or tiny values may be rounded in the display.
